Take the guesswork out of tracing genetic traits through a family tree with this mini-bundle that will teach your students how to read and analyze pedigree charts, predict the next generation of offspring, and think critically about how relatedness impacts the passing of traits through generations. Students take brief notes using a graphic organizer, track dominant and recessive traits through multiple pedigrees, and answer extension questions related to each pedigree.

This 1-day lesson includes a presentation that teaches students how to read a pedigree chart and provides an example pedigree for practice. Students then apply their understanding to analyze several pedigrees that demonstrate tracing simple dominant/recessive traits, inherited diseases, and sex-linked traits through a family.

This is a great introductory lesson into pedigrees and could easily lead into a more in-depth discussion about inheritance through the ages - royal lineages are especially interesting to discuss. Expand on this lesson by having students trace a trait through their own family tree and present it to the class. Challenge your students even further by studying dog pedigrees and how humans have manipulated canine lineages.
