Students will create a manipulative notes sheet about how the cell membrane is selectively permeable using the terms endocytosis, exocytosis, osmosis, transport proteins, active transport, and passive transport. They will then put what they learn to the test with an osmosis lab. Using grapes and raisins, students will see how osmosis occurs within the cell when these items are placed into a variety of solutions. Grapes and raisins are a great inexpensive model to represent the cell because of the permeability of the skin. Students note the change in shape, texture, and mass (using a balance), and graph their findings. With several conclusion questions to show mastery and extension questions to engage the advanced student, this lab and lesson will ensure understanding of osmosis and diffusion.
