Want a fun, hands-on way to teach the genetics concepts of selective breeding and hybridization in your middle school science class? Then this hybrid activity is the perfect "match" for you! Get your students thinking critically about the advantages and disadvantages of selective breeding and how the creation of hybrids impacts evolution. **Use of this resources does require prior knowledge of selective breeding and hybridization.
Used alone, in pairs, or in small groups, these hybrid matching flash cards are the perfect visual tool to help your students imagine how hybrids are created. Each card details information about each organism, including the benefits, drawbacks, and range where the organism is found. When a pair is created, students can visualize the hybrid based on the pairing, as well as read about the positive and negative contributions of each to determine what the offspring may be like. Organisms created include the beefalo, pizzly bear, limequat, watermint, geep and more!
Extend this lesson by having students draw one or more of their hybrid offspring based on the traits they believe will be passed on. They can then compare their drawings to the actual organism to see how similar they are!
