Looking for a way to make genetics more accessible to your students? Using Phenylthiocarbamide or PTC paper, you can give students a "tastable" way to identify the invisible traits that are passed on from generation to generation. Students can test their genetics real-time with this 1-day lab that's easy to prep and implement.
Some can taste PTC, while others cannot. In this lab, students test whether or not they are a taster and compare their data with the class population. Students will analyze their results and process the data using ratios, probability, and graphing.
Take this lesson even further by purchasing extra PTC paper to expand your sample population to include parents, grandparents, siblings, or other members of the school. You can carry the lesson through the next day as you reanalyze the data for the larger population.
WHAT'S INCLUDED in this 1 DAY LESSON:
• EDITABLE PowerPoint slides with bellwork, instructions, notes and embedded answer key to handouts
• NON-EDITABLE PDF handouts
→ Student Lab Handouts PDF
→ Answer keys
STUDENTS WILL:
• Taste PTC Paper (supplied by the teacher) and determine their phenotype
• Collect and analyze data about the class population
• Complete extension questions
TEACHERS LOVE THIS, HERE'S WHY:
❤️ Amanda B. says, "I used this with my 8th-grade science students and they LOVED it. It was the most memorable lab we did and they were excited about it. Very engaging for all my students. Great lab resource, thank you!"
❤️ Alfredo B. says, "As someone who has used PTC paper in the past, I loved this activity. Normally, I would just give students the paper to taste and that is it. I loved the lesson and it provided more depth to our conversations on genetics, and the scientific process."
❤️ The Seismic Classroom. says, "This was a very engaging resource for my students. They couldn't wait to find out if they were a "taster" or "non-taster". The graph with the class data was also great for practicing their graphing skills."
