Take the confusion and overwhelm out of teaching complex inheritance patterns with this mini-bundle about codominance, incomplete dominance, multiple alleles and polygenic inheritance. Students take notes using a graphic organizer, practice Non-Mendelian Punnett square crosses, and analyze forearm genetics to predict other related traits.
This 1-2 day lesson includes a presentation that teaches students about the various types of Non-Mendelian inheritance and provides example Punnett Squares for codiminance, incomplete dominance, polygenic inheritance and multiple alleles. Students are then able to apply their understanding to multiple types of Punnett square word problems, use critical thinking to solve the case of the mixed-up babies, and compare forearm length with classmates in an in-depth analysis of polygenic traits.
This is a great introductory lesson to Non-Mendelian genetics and polygenic inheritance and could easily lead into a more in-depth lesson about monohybrid and dihybrid crosses and the similarities and differences between simple Mendelian genetics and Non-Mendelian genetics . Expand on this lesson by exploring other polygenic traits. Are there similarities to the data students collect in the lesson? Ask students to take this concept all the way to the chromosomal level and model what that may look like!

TEACHERS LOVE THIS, HERE'S WHY:
❤️ ZulitaZhira H. says, "I am so glad to have found this resource for this topic! Thank you! Great and useful resource."
❤️ Get Wise with W. says, "This was exactly what I needed for my biology students!"
❤️ MS Mad Scientist says, "This was exactly what I needed. I especially love the activity about the mixed up babies in the hospital nursery. I will probably use this as my independent activity on lab day."
